NU Flight Services Recognised for Pioneering Work in Drone Operations

NU Flight Services, part of the NU Group, has been featured in the prominent Norwegian newspaper Aftenbladet for its cutting-edge contributions to European drone operations.
The article, “The Drone Apprentices,” spotlights the innovative work being done from the company’s headquarters in Norway, where we remotely monitor key operations across Europe.
The story provides a behind-the-scenes look at the company’s groundbreaking contributions to maritime safety, security, and environmental monitoring.
Training the Next Generation of Drone Experts
The article highlights NU FlightServices’ commitment to fostering new talent. Two apprentices, Benjamin Hauge Wehmer and Keno Reichel, have gained hands-on experience in drone operations, training to become operational technicians and drone pilots for over two years.
These apprenticeships underscore NUGroup’s dedication to the future of drone technology.
“We wouldn’t have hired two apprentices if we weren’t optimistic,” said Flight Services MD Ole Benjamin Wike in the Aftenbladet interview. “[Last year] was the year of restructuring. Now we are entering the year of action.”
Driving Innovation in Norway’s Drone Capital
NU Flight Services is proud to call Sandnes home, where it operates alongside some of Norway’s leading drone companies. Collaborations with local institutions, such as Sola Upper Secondary School, ensure access to a pipeline of skilled young professionals eager to advance the industry.
“Our region could well be called Norway’s drone capital,” said Arnstein Even Brekk, department head at SolaUpper Secondary School.
Expanding Horizons with Drone Technology
NU Flight Services is at the forefront of drone operations, supporting international authorities and organisations such as the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA).
Operating under three framework contracts valued at €47.5 million, NU Group uses drones to help coast guards, customs, and police monitor critical regions such as the Baltic Sea and the Strait of Gibraltar.
The team remotely controls drones to perform vital tasks, including detecting oil spills and monitoring ship traffic. NU Flight Services logged 4,000 operational hours in 2024, showcasing their expertise in delivering high-value drone solutions across Europe.
This feature in Aftenbladet underscores NU Flight Services’ position as a leader in drone technology, driving innovation and shaping the future of the industry. With cutting-edge solutions and a focus on cultivating the next generation of experts, we are paving the way for transformative opportunities in Europe and beyond.
